About the Pedal Wheelchair
Profhand Pedal Wheelchair, in use since 2009, has seemingly created a new category in patient therapy and ambulation. Originally designed as a mobile therapy rehabilitation training tool for stroke patients by its inventor Professor Yasunobu Handa at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan, it was envisioned to allow stroke patients the ability to train the afflicted weaker leg by exercising the healthy leg. EMG results showed that by getting the healthy limb in motion, the patient's afflicted limb may begin to be simultaneously stimulated into action as the muscles contract, whereas they could not consciously make the muscles contract before!
Though the original vision was to help improve the Quality of Life specifically for stroke patients, Profhand pedal wheelchair's benefits have now extended to a far broader spectrum of users and now acts as a daily exercise device for people around the world with Parkinson's, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, balance concerns (fall prevention), amputees, diabetics, recoverers from broken foot/leg, single leg disabilities, hip or knee problems, walkers/ canes/ and Scooters users, Physical Therapists and family members desiring healthier and safer transportation means, and many others just looking for a better form of exercise and independence.
